Allergic Rhinitis Causes and Symptoms

You may have noticed how some people start sneezing as soon as they come in contact with pollens. This is because they are 'allergic' to them. Think of an allergy as a glitch in your immune system wherein our body becomes sensitive to certain foreign particles. Allergies can sometimes go on to become a lot more serious than constant sneezing, like in case of allergic rhinitis. Allergic rhinitis is characterized by an inflammation in the nose. As the name suggests, it starts as an allergy. Different people may be allergic to different particles like pollens, dust particle, smoke, animal dander etc. Coming in contact with these particles may trigger the symptoms of allergic rhinitis. These can be visualized as runny nose, constant sneezing, itching and watery eyes. Although the condition is not exactly harmful in itself, it can go on to give birth to major diseases like sinusitis, conjunctivitis and asthma, if not treated. Ayurveda describes allergic rhinitis as Pratishyaya roga. Ayurveda explains it as a disorder occurring due to an allergen. The factors which can make one more susceptible to allergic rhinitis are low immunity and accumulation of ama (Note that ama is a collective term used for the residual toxins left from the process of digestion). Out of the three types of individuals there are on the basis of dosha predominance, namely Vata predominant, Pitta predominant and Kapha predominant, Vata predominant individuals (Individuals in which the activity of vata dosha is highest) are most likely to develop allergic rhinitis. This is not to be confused with Vata imbalance in which there is an aggravation of Vata dosha. Also, it is seen that there is a Kapha imbalance in allergic rhinitis. There may be some reasons behind increased susceptibility to allergic rhinitis.
