Are These Prega Myths True?

Old wives tales about pregnancy are a dime a dozen in our country. Some of them are true while a large number of them are false and based on superstition or social customs, but without any support from the medical fraternity. Some of the most common superstitions are regarding the boy and the girl child and their positions  during conception. Here we explore a few of them regarding the sex of a child to find out what is right and what is wrong.

prega myths

Perception: The mother is responsible for the sex of the child. She can control the sex of the child through her diet and physique and blessings of elders ( Sau Putravati Bhava )

False:

The mother  has only a supply of X chromosomes from the ovaries. The mother or her womb does not determine the sex of the child but it is the father and his sperm that calls the shots. The male sperm is capable of producing both X and Y chromosomes. If the Y bearing sperm of the male unites with the egg of the mother which is  a X chromosome then a male child is conceived, and if an X bearing sperm of the father unites with the X chromosome of the mother, a  female child is conceived. So the birth of the male child depends on the capability of the father to produce a Y chromosome and has nothing to do with the mother.

Perception: A female child has greater chances of survival than a male child for the same period and condition of gestation.

True.

Because the female child is the stronger sex in the womb. Thus given the same conditions and gestation period of a child, it is more likely that the girl child shall survive the pregnancy ordeal.

Perception: If a woman puts her right foot forward while walking, it’s a boy and if she puts her left foot forward first, it is a girl.

False.

The steps a woman takes has nothing to do with the baby inside her, and definitely not indicative of the sex of the child.

Perception: If your abdomen spreads sideways, it is a girl and if it protrudes front wise, it is a boy.

False.

The body position of the child depends on whether the abdomen spreads in the sides or in the front. It has nothing to do with a boy and a girl.

body position determines child sex

Perception : If you mate on a full moon night then there are more chances that a boy will be  born.

False.

There is absolutely no connection between the moon and the sex of the child.
