School puts students under scanner

A suburban Los Angeles school district has put its students under the scanner. The Glendale school district of Los Angeles, California have hired a firm to keep a tab on the student’s social media activities on Twitter, Facebook etc. The firm has been monitoring students’ accounts for indication of violence, drug-use, bullying, self-harm or suicidal thoughts, racism and sexual harassment for a year.

The district has paid $40,500 to the firm for their social media monitoring services. An initial pilot project was conducted on 9000 children at three high schools and a middle school. Among the results was a successful intervention with a student “who was speaking of ending his life” on his social media, said Chris Frydrych, CEO of the firm.

Further many more such cases popped up, dealing with the photograph of a child holding a gun which later was determined as fake. This particular strategy has been adopted by the school for the safety of the children says the school authorities.

This initiative of the district boards might help them understand their students better and handle such instances of deviated behavior.

Noticed the banner ads in Google search yet?

Even though in 2005 Google had promised never to start banner ads in the search, it seems that the promise is on the verge of breaking. A few users based in the US could view a large banner like advertisement at the top of the search results page.

Google has been recently experimenting with a limited number of desktop users in the US. The same was observed by Synrgy, a web marketing agency while searching for Southwest Airlines. A sponsored photo of the airlines was seen as a banner with the search results.

With banner ads, it seems that Google ads is now on the verge of a major change.

#GetCovered: An Obama Success Story

The health care campaign by the White House is faring better than any other twitter campaign organised by the Obama people. Obama care is basically a programme to provide Americans with access to affordable health care, improving the quality of healthcare, regulating the health insurance industry and reducing spending in health care.

The #GetCovered campaign on Twitter is for the launch of an online health insurance marketplace by the US Government, is being used more positively than negatively by tweeters, according to a sentiment score prepared using Social Media Monitoring tools.

The Campaign allows uninsured people to share their stories and buy affordable coverages. Though some tweets have mocked the campaign with phrases like, “ #GetCovered with egg on your face”

The campaign did have a significant amount of negative feedback but the sentiments derived speak volumes about its success as compared to any other campaign organised by the white house over the social media.

Virtual walking tours of the grave

When there is Google there is nothing to worry about. Google is now mapping the Arlington National Cemetery such that you can pay homage to your fore father from your house itself. Google is using its product, Google Street View, to archive images of the military cemetery and other panoramas which are spread over 624 acres.

The cemetery houses more than 400,000 active duty service members, veterans and their families. Among those buried at the cemetery are President John F. Kennedy, President William Howard Taft and 12 Supreme Court Justices. Google is using the same product it used to map 100 monuments in India and the Galapagos Islands for its street view.

Although the idea and concept might lure a large number of national devotees but Google will only be able to archive the current cemeteries and further additions to them might not be possible. The cemetery houses around 7,000 funerals per year.

The product shall be available by May 2014 which shall also commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Arlington National Cemetery.

Facebook’s stance on the beheading video

After the ban on posting videos with content that could disturb users in May 2013 was removed by Facebook, a video of a women being decapitated in Mexico was posted on Facebook last week. Following the post were comments made by many users requesting the authorities at the social network to remove the video.

Media houses like BBC and CNN intervened and investigated the issue which had troubled so many users including the UK PM, David Cameron. The PM tweeted on Tuesday that the content could have a negative impact on those who see it.

Facebook’s “Rights and Responsibilities” page lists warnings to users under the “Safety” section: “You will not post content that: is hate speech, threatening, or pornographic; incites violence; or contains nudity or graphic or gratuitous violence.”

After much chaos and dislike, Facebook has decided to regulate the level of control a user has when he makes a post and when he views it. They have agreed upon adding certain warnings in advance about an image or video’s content.

Facebook Referral Traffic Increases

According to Facebook reports, the facebook referral traffic from Facebook to Media sites increased by 170% last year. Andy Mitchell, director of partnerships for Facebook, attributed much of the growth in referrals to improvements in Facebook’s News Feed algorithm. Facebook also disclosed that from September 2012 to September 2013, Time’s referral traffic rose 208%, BuzzFeed’s increased by 855% and Bleacher Report experienced a boost of 1081%.

Encouraging news organizations to post more often will aid a “Trending Articles” feature that seems to be a likely next move for the company.

Facebook took the opportunity to advise the users and specifically the brand managers to post more often and more frequently. The social media platforms aims at bringing as much traffic as they can via media sites owing to the recent competition with Twitter after the launch of Twitter ads.

Twitter to silence its music app

Twitter is planning to bid goodbye to its 6 month old #Music app after giving it a high profile launch.

Twitter #Music is a service that helps users discover and find new music based on the microblogging network’s activity, the artists users follow and songs that are trending. In addition to its iPhone app, there is also a web version of Twitter #Music.

Although, the app had a strong backup and Twitter to support it, the app was not able to maintain its position among the top 150 apps when Twitter’s video sharing app is ranked at the 15th position overall and 2nd according to the social media coverages. The #Music app has reached the 170th position (as of 21st October 2013).

Twitter is currently in the process of revamping its music team, and that its future focus will likely be on partnering with existing outlets, such as iTunes, Rdio or Spotify, rather than building a separate experience in-house. This makes sense because even if Twitter #Music as a mobile app is a failure, music still has lots of business potential, especially as the company prepares to go public.

When given a close observation it was found that Twitter #Music hasn’t received a UI update for iOS 7, it still lies in the iOS 6 version. Experts say that an in built music app will do much better for Twitter as compared to a separate app and interface.

Music shall continue to be a good business strategy but when incorporated and managed well.

Facebook Ads are profitable on iOS

Researches carried out by many institutions reveal that Facebook ads on iOS are 1,790% more profitable as compared to Android. The study is carried out by Nanigans, one of the biggest buyers of facebook ads.

“Retailers are realizing significantly greater return from audiences on iOS than audiences on Android,” the report says. “For the first three quarters of 2013, RPC [revenue per click] on iOS averaged 6.1 times higher than Android and ROI [return on investment] on iOS averaged 17.9 times higher than Android.”

The difference in the device analytics has set the various marketers thinking, whether they should target the Android users, iOS users or both. The question mark shall prevail until there are better outputs achieved.

Google and Facebook are now partners

Google is all set to sell the ad inventories for the social media giant Facebook. The ads will be sold via Google’s DoubleClick Bid Manager, its real-time bidding system. In a few months, marketers will be able to buy ads for Facebook’s Ad Exchange on the platform.

Though Facebook and Google can be considered as competitors but their joint venture might bring certain valuable changes that could sensationalise the social media domain altogether. Earlier, Google and Facebook have worked together using each others features and functions for their benefits.

Google Street View can help Scientists

Researchers say that the online Google Street View can help the scientists locate invasive species over the social media across the globe. By mapping the various biodiversity rich zones and other native and invasive organisms scientists can derive insights and carry out their further study with ease.

The Google Street View provides a panoramic view of the streets. Recently, Google Street View has offered vistas of many places off the beaten track as well, such as Antarctica, the Galapagos, the Amazon, Mount Everest’s base camp and the Great Barrier Reef in Australia.

The scientists concentrated on a region about 18,000 square miles large in France that was recently colonized by the caterpillars. They further divided this area into blocks about 100 square miles in size. e researchers analyzed data regarding the presence or absence of caterpillar nests collected in these blocks through either direct observation in the field or Google Street View. They found Google Street View was 96% as accurate as field data.

This has added a great value to the Google Street View and accounts for a better use of the feature altogether.

A customised approach to Twitter

Twitter is enabling many new features into the platform to make it more appealing and user friendly for the users. In the early October 2013, Twitter unveiled its first app for the Android tablets. The only feature that was hidden was the ability to draw doodles which can be posted on the Twitter feed.

The feature was not known of until twitter’s blog posted a vine video where an artist was drawing an image and thereafter it was tweeted for the others to see. Samsung’s Galaxy Note 10.1-2014 Edition is the only tablet that currently works with Twitter’s app.

The new Twitter drawings provide users with a little more room for creativity. It may be able to increase the number of images shared on the site, which would enable an increase in the engagements; tweets including images are retweeted more frequently than those without.

Social Media helped him become a senator

The social media has a strong influence on nearly every aspect of life. Cory Booker became a national figure well before being elected to the federal government owing to his effective and large scale use of social media. Termed as the folk hero, Booker has a total of 1.5 million followers on Twitter.

The reputation Booker has earned as a social media enthusiast is because of his constant interaction on nearly all the platforms and his first announcement on YouTube regarding his interest to explore a senate bid last year. He won the Democratic primary for the special election on Aug. 13, posting more than 100 times to Twitter, Facebook and Instagram throughout the day. He and his team were prolific with their social media posts during the election too, focusing mainly on tweets and retweets but not completely avoiding other networks.

Booker is currently beating Lonegan 55% to 44%, with nearly all precincts reporting, according to the Associated Press. The Wednesday elections (16th October 2013) have been so much of a test of all of its campaigns and the results of the test will only be declared once the total number of votes and polls are calculated.

Google glass, a class above the rest

Google never stops amazing us, it has often come up with devices and softwares that have changed the way society communicates and functions. With Glass, Google has set an altogether different dimension bringing to light some of the features which were once thought to be impossible.

Recently Google started the Glass Explorer Program that was to check the device, an early adopter program available for developers and consumers. Every applicant was to post a message on Google+ or Twitter with the hashtag #ifhgadglass and few of them were then invited to attend a conference in New York.

The explorer program took place in last week of October, 2013 where students had 10 minutes each to pitch their Glass app ideas before a panel of expert judges, comprised of startup founders and professors, who offered constructive feedback.

The glass allows its master to take pictures, record videos, share what he sees, get directions to particular destinations, speak messages and even translate your message into different languages. The device is light and strong and can be handled easily.
