Selfie: Oxford’s Word Of The Year 2013

a photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically one taken with a smartphone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website


The word selfie has recently earned the honor of being Oxford’s word of the year 2013 and a place in Oxford Dictionary. According to a press release on the Oxford Dictionary’s blog, the usage of this word in the English language has seen an increase of 17000% in the past year.


A word generated from the social media domain, Selfie was first used on Instagram when Jennifer Lee updated her own picture on January 16, 2011 with a hashtag “#selfie.” She herself had no clue that she would be making history that day.


There are around 55 million photos shared on Instagram on a daily basis and according to the company, the word ‘selfie’ has been used 57 million times on the website.
