Facebook acquires SportStream


Facebook has acquired SportStream for an undisclosed amount. Facebook disclosed the news in a note on their Facebook + Media fan page on December 17, 2013. The news was also confirmed by the team at SportStream on their website.


Founded in 2012, SportStream is a social startup offering a second screen experience to its users and enhance the social media experience for sports fans through their proprietary platform, SportsBase.


Facebook’s acquisition of SportStream speaks volumes of what the social media giant is planning ahead. When Twitter started focusing on news, Facebook acquires SportStream. It seems like Facebook is planning to give Twitter a tough competition to be the ultimate source of real-time information and conversation around major events, especially the ones related to sports.


According to Justin Osofsky, Vice-President, Media Partnerships and Global Operations at Facebook “SportStream’s demonstrated track record of surfacing interesting and engaging content, along with their deep understanding of our products, means that we will be able to build a better experience for the people who use Facebook, and for our partners who depend on us for real-time insights”.


The SportBase shall benefit the page in more than one way. A team page made by putting together social content from Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, with more authentic and credible information on scores and stats will boost the fans engagement. However, the gem of the deal will be the first hand news regarding the play making Facebook an ultimate destination for every sports fan.

In almost every part of the world, one or other sports is becomes the second religion to the people. By acquiring SportStream, Facebook has made it clear on how it wants to boost the social media engagement on its platform. Who knows, it might even help them in reconnecting with the teen following they have been loosing continuously in the past year.
