Nelson Mandela, former President of South Africa and destroyer of apartheid, passed away on December 5, 2013, at the age of 95. Fondly known as Madiba, Mandela touched the many lives in his non-violent struggle against apartheid. People showed their respect for one of the most loved and respected leader of the world on social media.
Users generated 7.2 million tweets about his demise, including a peak of 95,000 tweets per minute. On Facebook Thursday, the traffic was even higher. A total of 39 million people generated more than 80 million interactions related to Mandela’s death. As to be expected, South Africa was the second most active country in terms of posts about its former president, following only the United States.
The US President, Barack Obama tweeted, “Let us pause and give thanks for the fact that Nelson Mandela lived—a man who took history in his hands and bent the arc of the moral universe toward justice.” Former US president Bill Clinton tweeted his picture with the leader saying “I will never forget my friend Madiba”.
His soul may have departed this world, but his ideas will always be cherished and followed keeping his spirit alive.
