Google+ ads not for Google+

What would you think if the ad service offered by Google using Google+ content will not be displayed on Google+. +Post ads, the new ad service launched by Google will be displayed on Google Networks but not on Google+. The ‘+post” ads will run on Google networks and would appear just as Google+ posts with the only exception that they will not be seen on the platform.

The Google+ ads don’t include recommendations, though — only public posts from Google+ users. A comment from someone in one of your circle won’t jump to the top, like one in Facebook’s Sponsored Stories will do.

Eran Arkin, a product manager at Google explained how some of the big names are testing ad units. Toyota USA, Ritz Crackers and Cadbury UK are carrying out the analysis in order to gauge its effectiveness and its credibility. Social annotations on the ads increase the click-through rate. Ads get 50% higher “expansion rates” than average, referring to the frequency with which the reader hovers over an ad for more than two seconds to expand it.

Google+ plans to open this service for more advertisers by next month, once the initial testing and evaluation phase is over. Lack of participation on Google’s social network has been the sole motive behind such measures and initiatives, +Post ads are Google’s latest hedge against new native advertising and socially enabled ad units from the likes of Facebook and Twitter.

Google is expected to earn$3.1 billion from its display ads this year, compared to Facebook’s $2.8 billion.
