Instagram’s Business Lead to become Snapchat’s COO

Emily White, Director of Business Operation at Instagram division at Facebook, is leaving to become COO of Snapchat. Emily was in charge of bringing advertising to Instagram.

After rejecting a $3 billion acquisition offer from Facebook, Snapchat have now poached a senior Facebook executive. Emily was Director of Mobile Partnership at Facebook and Director of Online sales and Operations at Google before that. Her joining Snapchat strongly indicates the company’s preparation for inclusion of advertisement on this platform.

“I have always been captivated by the creativity that has gone into the product … and I think that Evan has been looking for someone who can help him grow and scale what is already something that has changed a lot of the way people think about the mobile experience.” said Emily White.

Snapchat’s growth has been phenomenal. In June, the company announced its 100 million users had sent more than 110 million snaps in total. By October, users were sending 400 million “snaps” per day, Snapchat’s CEO Evan Spiegel declared in a closed door meeting at Goldman Sachs.

Is poaching Facebook’s top executive a declaration of independence or is it just an innocent way to prepare Snapchat for entering into advertising?
