Ever felt weird and awkward when clicking like button on a sad post on Facebook? Apparently Facebook thinks the same way, or at least its engineers do. In this year’s Facebook’s annual Hackathon, a Facebook engineer created a sympathize button for the social networking site.
When friends update statuses telling you that they’ve been fired; they’ve had a death in the family; maybe they just had a bad day, you cannot go ahead and like it. You want to show that you care and are there to support them. With sympathize button, now you can show them more appropriate emotions.
You will not see sympathize button on the posts along with the like button. The button would replace the like button when you add a negative emotions from Facebook’s predefined list.
The button has not been rolled out by Facebook. “A lot of people were very excited about it, but we made a decision that it was not exactly the right time to launch that product.” said Dan Muriello, Engineer at Facebook.
So Facebook understands its users need to ‘sympathize’ but not their need to ‘dislike’?
