In April 2013, WhatsApp’s CEO Jan Koum claimed that the service then had more users than Twitter and carried more messages than Facebook. Today, a survey conducted with 3,759 smartphone owners by a research firm On Device revealed that WhatsApp has surpassed Facebook to become the leading mobile messaging service.
Even after Facebook innumerable attempts to enhance its mobile site and messenger, the company have been struggling on the mobile front facing a strong competition from WhatsApp, one of the premier smartphone messaging application. WhatsApp carries as many as 20 billion messages per day, double of Facebook’s daily message traffic.
According to the reports, 86 percent of respondents use social messaging daily, while 73 per cent use their phones for voice calls, 75 per cent use SMS messages, and 60 per cent use email.
These platforms are also used by brands to advertise their products. Seeing the web of advertising and marketing on Facebook and Twitter, Jan Koum said, “We do have a manifesto opposing advertising. We’re so bombarded with ads so much in our daily lives and we felt that smartphones aren’t the place for that. Our phones are so intimately connected to us, to our lives.”
The future of the industry is unknown, but it seems that Whatsapp has got secured quite a good lead.
