Snapchat files a restraining order

Snapchat has filed a restraining order against Frank Reginald Brown IV, who claims to be a co-founder of the company. A former fraternity brother of CEO Evan Spiegel, Reggie reportedly leaked a video deposition to Business Insider, in which CEO Evan Spiegel admitted that Brown came up with the disappearing photo idea, and also says he “may deserve something for some of his contributions.”.

As per the order filed on December 6, Reggie Brown cannot share deposition videos of the Snapchat CEO as such video can do ‘irreparable injury to Snapchat’ and that the information is ‘highly confidential’.

Brown and Snapchat have been in and out of the court for past 10 months. Brown had initially sued the company saying that Snapchat was his idea. Now on Friday, the company went against him claiming that the videos leaked by Brown to strengthen his claim were confidential and a part of the ongoing lawsuit.

Snapchat is not the only company facing such accusation. Anyone who knows about Facebook’s history or has seen ‘The Social Network’, knows the Winklevoss brothers who sued Mark Zuckerberg for stealing their idea of a social networking website. Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss accepted Facebook’s $65 million settlement offer and waived their claim on the social media giant.

“Snapchat will suffer great or irreparable injury if plaintiff is permitted to disclose Snapchat’s confidential information to the public. A temporary restraining order is therefore necessary,” the document read.

If Brown loses his claim on Snapchat, it will be a big blow for him. The company has already turned down a $3 billion offer for Snapchat, one third of which can be Brown’s.
