Ever since the mobile and tablet viewings overtook the desktop, the prominent news channel has taken to social measures to reach out to a wider and a larger audience. BBC goes extra social and this time they have launched Instafax, a new short-form video news service delivered to Instagram users on 16th January.
At the moment the service is in the testing and monitoring phase where in three 15 second videos will be uploaded to round up the day’s news. Depending upon the response received and the momentum gained by the service it shall be deemed permanent.
Instafax has got its name from Ceefax, the world’s first teletext service that ran on UK television until 2012. According to Steve Herrmann, head of BBC News Online, “the trial was a response to changing audience patterns after monthly figures for December, showed mobile and tablet consumption had overtaken desktop for the first time.”
Still the service is in the trial phase and time and again new features and updates shall be added to eventually find out if the current social media audience likes receiving short videos to tell them what is going around in the world via Instagram.
Although BBC is not the first TV News Channel who is trying to make its way to the digital space, BBC stands a fair chance owing to its credibility and authenticity that it has gained over the past years. Instafax viewers are being encouraged to comment and give feedback. So far it has had mixed reactions ranging from “Instafax is a game changer” to “worst idea ever”.
Whether this new video service will become a regular thing or be totally eliminated from the BBC curriculum we will get to only a month later. Till then tell us what you think about the idea in the comments section below.
