GIF animation enters Pinterest

Until now Pinterest did not allow users to pin GIF images that could animate and become still upon clicking them. A new feature only available to selected pinners will be able to play GIFs within the platform.

Now, after uploading a GIF to a pinboard, users can play or pause the GIF by clicking a small “play” button in the lower left-hand corner of the image. Previously, when users uploaded GIFs to Pinterest, they appeared as still images unless users followed the link back to the GIF’s original source outside of the platform.

As per the statements made by a spokesperson, the company aims at enabling its users save things they love on social media to the website which may include GIF animated images. As such the new feature will allow a user to do just that.

Though the new feature is yet not visible to all the users, many are still not seeing GIFs as animated images but still ones as before. The old uploaded pictures in the GIF format can also be played now which means the feature is capable of identifying existing GIFs on Pinterest.

The feature is in the testing phase and is thus rolled out only to a handful users. There is still time for the update to be rolled out for all the users and formly be a part of Pinterest.
