Pinterest acquires VisualGraph

VisualGraph, an image recognition and visual search technology startup from San Francisco has been acquired by the social media image sharing app Pinterest. Although the terms of the deal have not been discussed yet but Pinterest has taken over both the employees and the technology of the image recognition company. The terms and conditions according to which the deal have not been revealed.

According to a spokesperson, VisualGraph CEO Kevin Jing will lead a new “visual discovery team and that the team has begun working with Pinterest with high spirits and hopes best for the merger companies. He has initially worked with Google as a senior research scientist in 2012 after which he started VisualGraph.

The spokesperson further said that, “Our mission at Pinterest is to help people discover the things they love and do these things in their real lives. We hope to build better image recognition technology that helps us understand what people are Pinning so we can help people find more things they love.”

Acquiring such a company will help Pinterest, it already has a search tool but it relies on image captions to decipher what’s in the picture. The new technology of VisualGraph will help enhance the search feature by returning results that aren’t clearly marked.

The merging of two companies will help them in their future endeavours and lets hope that the best comes out for both of them.
