After a full year the United States Patent and Trademark Office has given Candy Crush Saga makers, the King.com the sweetest treat by approving the patent. The game developers have now a full right over the word ‘Candy’.
There is no doubt on the fact that this game in particular has raised the bar for all the other games on the social media belonging to the same arena and the same genre. Within a short span of time Candy Crush Saga has almost tripled the number of players and fans of the game are increasing on a daily basis. Not only on the desktop, the game has been downloaded on nearly all smart phones and is played quite a while.
The word Candy did literally reflect the game and now after the approval it is legal. Now, app developers with games on the market that include the word in the title are reportedly receiving emails from Apple asking them to remove their apps from the App Store.
The trademark includes games and software, educational services, and, oddly enough, clothing. Getting a patent approved for a word as common as Candy will definitely raise a concern amongst most of the tech developers and specifically for all the indie developers who lack excessive funding to meet the financial demands of using a patent word. Benny Hsu, the developer behind All Candy Casino Slots — Jewels Craze Connect: Big Blast Mania Land, told Gamezebo that he doesn’t have the money to fight back. “I plan on changing the name if that is what I must do,” he said.
Being the most downloaded and played games of 2013, Candy Crush Saga has rolled a yet another benchmark up its sleeves.
