Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan donated 18 million Facebook shares worth $970 million or more to the Silicon Valley Community Foundation in December 2013. According to the Chronicle of Philanthropy, this is the largest donation made this year by anybody. The couple donated the same number of shares to the same organisation in 2012. Though, then they were equivalent to $500 million. Facebook’s success on the social media domain over the last 12 months is the reason this value of the same amount of share has almost doubled since last year donation.
The Silicon Valley Community Foundation serves number of charitable causes ensuring adequate funds to these causes. According to its website, the foundation awarded more than 10,000 grants to organizations spread across 29 different countries, .
Zuckerberg is one of the youngest self-made billionaire according to Forbes Magazine. The Facebook CEO makes it a point to put his money to the right use. Apart from the donation of 36 million shares, Zuckerberg also signed the ‘Giving Pledge’ in 2010 according to which he is supposed to donate half of his wealth in charity over his lifetime or after his death.
