Facebook in Russia

Russia had been a Facebook free country until Facebook’s partnership with Yandex, the Russian search engine. Now return public Facebook posts and comments in its search results as part of a partnership announced Tuesday. The same was announced by Yandex on its website. These Facebook posts will appear in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Turkey.

Facebook is aware of the odds that it will have to face, majorly the competition from VK, or Vkontakte which was earlier regarded as a Facebook clone by Zuckerberg, the man himself. Although Vkontakte has been doing very well in Russia chances are that indulgence of Facebook allows Yandex to overpower every other social media website largely.

The Yandex website declares to dominate the search traffic by 60% and for them addition of Facebook to their search results will increase this further. Yandex already partners with other social networks, including Twitter and VK, and says that it shows no allegiances, but strives to provide users as much information as possible.

According to a press release release by the Russian search engine, “We don’t compete with anybody in the sphere of social networks; instead we seek to collaborate with all the players. We see one of our key tasks as being the creation of social search services, using content from all the popular social networks in equal measure.”

The partnership will work both ways, benefitting both the parties involved. This particular step might result into Facebook being allowed in the country. We will have to wait and watch how well the partnership works out to be.
