Now know what’s popular on Facebook

Facebook is now switching to trending as a new feature that will be included alongside the news feed. Trending will show a personalized list of popular topics for each user, combining their interests with content getting the most attention across the entire platform. The same was announced on 16th January.

The trending topics will be picked up according to certain algorithms and will be presented description and users can click on the trend to see a list of posts and articles related to that topic. According to a spokesperson, “a sharp increase in popularity,” not necessarily a large volume of posts or articles about a particular subject. This basically means that subjects that are commonly trending will not always be on the list of trending topics.

Of course, with such a feature users are bound to connect Facebook with the microblogging site Twitter, with advertising, promoted tweets and hashgtags being common on the two platforms it now seems that both are somewhat on the similar lines and provide almost similar features as of now.

Facebooks inclusion of followers in 2012 and now the trending topics showcases how both of the social media websites are trying to be each other in someway or the other.
